Twin Cities Marathon Training Week 2

Monday Planned: GA 5 miles
Monday Actual: Rest, foam rolling.

Tuesday Planned: Rest
Tuesday Actual: 3 easy miles after work with a couple of walk breaks in the third mile since I started waaaaaaay too fast. Oops.

Wednesday Planned 4th of July 10k
Wednesday Actual: Obviously racing a 10k or even a 5k wasn't in the plans given the past week of running. I went and hung out with the 605 crew during the parade and then went out for 4 miles. I ran two which felt hard and awkward and my quads were so tight, and at the turn around I realized that nothing I could do to activate my glutes were working, so I opted to walk the two miles in instead of aggravating my knee again.

After the run I did some band walks up and down the driveway while Kyle was washing the cars.

Thursday Planned Rest
Thursday Actual: 5 miles with strides. AFTER band walks. These made a world of difference. My legs felt like belonged to a different human. Phew.

Friday Planned: Recovery 4 miles
Friday Actual: 4 recovery miles at the coffee run. Stepping up my band work game pre-run as clamshells are no longer cutting it, and that seems to be doing the trick to keeping the butt working and the knee pain gone. Very thankful to have figured this out today than in ten weeks!

Saturday Planned: Med-long 14 miles (hilly)
Saturday Actual: 14 mile long run, sans hills. My running buddy and I had a miscommunication which lead to her joining me for the first ten miles instead of the last ten miles, and that through a wrench into my plan, so we did 14 on the trails, nice and flat.

Sunday Planned: Rest
Sunday Actual: Rest. I strongly considered going out and walk running 2-3 miles to get in my planned miles for the week, but quickly remembered that I wasn't able to run at all a week ago, so I probably shouldn't push my luck. Derp.

Total Mileage Planned: 32 miles
Total Mileage Actual:  30.38 miles

Weekly Reads: From Twinkle, With Love

From Twinkle, With Love is the newest book by Sandy Menon, author of When Dimple Met Rishi, which I looooooved. I was so excited for her newest book. I flew through this book and it was incredibly sweet. There were a few parts of the story that seemed a little unbelievable, or maybe uncharacteristic of the main character, and I had some issues with how neatly some things wrapped up, but I would still highly recommend it.

My rating: 4 stars

Summary from goodreads:

Aspiring filmmaker and wallflower Twinkle Mehra has stories she wants to tell and universes she wants to explore, if only the world would listen. So when fellow film geek Sahil Roy approaches her to direct a movie for the upcoming Summer Festival, Twinkle is all over it. The chance to publicly showcase her voice as a director? Dream come true. The fact that it gets her closer to her longtime crush, Neil Roy—a.k.a. Sahil’s twin brother? Dream come true x 2.

When mystery man “N” begins emailing her, Twinkle is sure it’s Neil, finally ready to begin their happily-ever-after. The only slightly inconvenient problem is that, in the course of movie-making, she’s fallen madly in love with the irresistibly adorkable Sahil.

Twinkle soon realizes that resistance is futile: The romance she’s got is not the one she’s scripted. But will it be enough?

Told through the letters Twinkle writes to her favorite female filmmakers, From Twinkle, with Love navigates big truths about friendship, family, and the unexpected places love can find you.

Twin Cities Marathon Training Week 1

Monday Planned: GA+Speed 8 miles 10x100
Monday Actual: Opted to rest, foam roll, stick and ice my knee for one more day.

Tuesday Planned: Rest
Tuesday Actual: Went out for an easy 4 mile to see how the knee would feel. Yay! It was great. And then I had a ton of pressure in my knee after the run. Grumble.

Wednesday Planned GA 4 miles
Wednesday Actual: I wasn't going to run as my knee was still being a little weird, and then I was feeling sick to my stomach, but when I got to the group run it was a Hoka demo run, so I had to try them out! 2 whole miles and my knee felt pretty ok. I also had my hour strength class in the wee hours of the morning. The strides felt meh. on my knee.

Thursday Planned Rest
Thursday Actual: Rest. Ice, foam roll, stick.

Friday Planned: Recovery 3 miles
Friday Actual: More Rest.
Ice, foam roll, stick.

Saturday Planned: Med-Long 12 miles
Saturday Actual: I was optimistic that I could run long after all the days off, I was wrong. I did attempt a short easy run in the afternoon to test out the knee and I had a new pain in a new part of my knee. Great!

Sunday Planned: Rest
Sunday Actual: Rest. Ice. Band Work. 60 min float spa.

Total Mileage Planned: 27 miles
Total Mileage Actual:  6.38 miles

Weekly Reads: Runaways Vol 1 Find Your Way Home

I will read anything that Rainbow Rowell is a part of. Full stop. I didn't totally freak out when it was announced that she was doing the graphic novel for Runaways, partially because I didn't really know what Runaways was/is. But you can be sure that I was the first to get my library's copy when it came in! And it did not disappoint! I would highly recommend to graphic novel fans, and those that aren't!

My rating: 4

June in Review

Total Miles:  68.34 miles down from 118.33  miles last month.  52.6 miles last June. Another month without 100 miles, but not for lack of trying.

Total Time: 11:21:40 down from 20:06:49

Total Runs: 14 runs for an average of 4.88 miles/run.

Highest weekly mileage:

6/11/2018 – 6/17/2018:26.2 mi4:11:409:36 / mi

Most hardcore run: I attempted to do my last speed session at 12:30pm on a track with no shade that you could see and feel the heat pouring off the black track. It would've been extra hardcore if I had finished the workout, but instead I got really dizzy and had to call it quits.

Favorite run: The one coffee run that Toni and I did this month.

Favorite Race: Garry Bjorklund half was the only race, and I didn't really love it. The race weekend was amazing, but I won't need to do the half in the future.

Favorite Jam: Weezer's cover of Africa. It's so great.

Duluth Trip Recap

We packed up my Subie to head to Duluth on Thursday morning. We grabbed some coffee and were well on our way. As soon as we got to the SD/MN border it was discovered that I forgot my fan. PANIC. We were staying in the dorms, and the notes were pretty adamant about bringing a fan as the dorms didn't have AC, also I'm the lightest sleeper in the world, and it was college where I originally learned that I have to sleep with a fan on to drown out the noise of the rest of the universe. It was quickly decided that we had to turn back and get it... 30 minutes into our trip. In that 30 minute drive back home, we thought of several other necessary items that we had left behind as well. Gah!

We loaded back up and were back on our way. The trip flew by, we had a ho-hum lunch outside of the cities, ran into some annoying construction north of the cities, and played "guess if that car has runners going to grandma's or not". The drive there seemed to take no time at all.

We went straight to the expo when we arrived, as we had heard that Friday was insanity their, and wanting to avoid chaos at all costs. There were some cool vendors there, and somehow I managed to spend $0 there. What the heck??

From the expo we made our way to a delicious Indian food place. My stomach and taste buds were oh so happy.

Next stop: the dorms! We arrived at our digs for the weekend and promptly decided that we were meant to be college roomies, and that in an alternate universe, surely we would've been. Like the universe in which we're not 9 years apart. Whatever.

The next morning we got up, ran some errands, and then went out for a shake out run.

FYI Duluth is hilly AF. Holy cow. I had more elevation gain in 3 miles than I typically do in a long run in Sioux Falls. The shake out felt gooooood. Like really good. Like I'm surer excited to tear up the race course good.

After the run we got ready for lunch. And while Toni was in the bathroom making her hair look pretty, the world was ending outside our window. Like right out there, is supposed to be the Superior. Except you can't see it because the world has ended.

I desperately needed a beer at lunch, but also needed to hydrate but ALSO was tempted by the lavender infused lemonade. Mmmm happiness.

After lunch we made a very important run to the liquor store for some local beers to take home slash enjoy after the race. Luckily for me, we had a cute little dorm fridge in our room perfectly for beers.

And then in true Toni and Jeri race weekend fashion, we opted to take a little siesta after lunch. This tradition started in Twin Cities for the ten mile, and man I love a good nap. And there's no better excuse for one than an early wake up call the next day!

Luckily by the time we got up from our naps, it was basically time to go eat again. Lolz. We made our way downtown to Pizza Luce for some pizza and a salad. And a beer. obviously.

Then it was time to head back to the dorms and get ready for the race. Clothes laid out, gear bag packed and ready to go. And back to bed. Does it seem like all we did was eat and sleep? Because you'd be correct.

After the race, I had every intention of enjoying a shower beer. But then I forgot to bring my beer into the shower. Fail.

We got ready as quickly as we could, which wasn't super quick because we were still freezing from the race. We went back to the same lunch spot as the previous day, because there was so much delicious stuff on the menu that I couldn't have the day before the race, and I wanted it all after the race. Pretzels with beer cheese sauce? check. Nachos? check. Side of fries? check.

There may or may not have been another nap after lunch. Getting up at 4am and running for 2 hours will do that to you, I guess. We woke up and connected with some other SFWR gals that were also staying in the dorms and made our way back downtown for some drinks.

I very much appreciated the free shuttle from the dorms back to downtown.

We had some beverages at a bar that I felt super old at, and eventually made our way across the street where one my college friends was. We had a good long life catch up chat, and it was so good to see him. It's so fun to see someone after years and years apart and it's like it's been a day or two.

We drank all the beer that the brewery had (jk, I think) and around 9 realized we hadn't eaten dinner yet. Luckily a bunch of places delivered so we had pizza yet again. Mmm pizza.

Once we got back to the dorms, I gave myself some important legs up the wall time before bed. Ahh.

Sunday morning we made our way to a super cute cafe for breakfast before hitting the road. It was a long wait for a table but it was a perfectly sunny and nice morning to wait with a coffee in hand.

We were on our way out of town when Toni went rogue and pulled off the interstate stating that we *needed* pictures. And she was right. We were so cold after the race that we didn't take any solo finisher photos with our medals. Plus I still wanted to take my ice bath in the Superior!

It was a great race weekend! Can't wait for the next one!

Garry Bjorklund Half Recovery Week Training

Monday: Rest + foam rolling. I felt like I could run, but I opted for an extra day of rest and a little more foam rolling.

Tuesday: 4.24 miles with Toni. Kept it nice and easy.

Wednesday: I had every intention to run 4 miles with the group run, but it was raining cats and dogs and had been all day, with flash flooding. I opted to chat with runners about their Grandma's experience while foam rolling before yoga class.

Thursday: 5 recovery miles. Toni and I ran 5 miles after work. With less than a half mile left, I stepped weird and felt a yucky sensation up the back of my right knee. It dissipated after a few strides so I finished the run.

Friday: 4 recovery miles. Friday morning Toni and I met up for the coffee run and got in 4 miles. My knee felt okay during the run but after the run during coffee it started to feel really stiff and wonky.

Saturday: I had searched out local running groups to run a long run on Saturday. After driving to Des Moines Friday after our run, and then sitting in the bleachers for 7 hours, my knee was so stiff and felt like I had a ton of pressure under the knee cap. I iced it after the meet, and again after dinner.

Sunday: Still a lot of pressure under my knee cap, so I iced it before the meet. It was starting to feel better, but than I had to drive home. Grumble grumble.

Total miles: 13.38 miles
