Late Fall Race Plans

It's that time in the goal training cycle where I can't help but think about other races. It helps take my mind off of the crazy that is running 26.2 miles. Why do we do this?!?

There are some fun shorter races that I would like to do to close out the last few months of 2018, assuming my legs recover in a timely fashion after 26.2 miles. Did I mention I'm running 26.2 miles soon?!?! UFF DA.

10/27 Trick or Treat
5k/10k I'm not sure what distance I'd do. It'll depend how I'm feeling, I think. I'd like to run a strong 10k, but I think that might be a stretch.

11/11 Christmas Tree Dash
There is a 3 mile, 2 mile, and 1 mile distance for this race. I don't know what distance I'll run, but I don't think I want to do a 3 mile. The parks and rec "5ks" are typically 3 miles, so I'd be curious what I could run in the other two distances. I always have to work this race weekend, so I'd be excited to give it a go!

11/24 Banquet 10k
Until last year, I had never ran this race. It was so great last year, and so cool to see so many families come together to donate money to the banquet before spending the rest of their holiday together. I think I can run a pretty speedy 10k by this time, and might be a good indicator of how my December half will shake out!

12/9 Dallas Half Marathon
I'm so excited to get back down south and run this race and spend some time with Dominique. She's the best running friend, and I wish she lived closer so we could be less virtual running buddies and more IRL running buddies!

Twin Cities 10 Mile Lottery

My running buddy, Toni and I signed up for the Twin Cities 10 Mile lottery last weekend. It's open for 10 days before participants are selected. I ran the race in 2010 and desperately would like to run it again this year since I'm planning to run the TCM full in 2018 (eeps!) We registered as a team so we'll either get in together or not.

I have a room booked at the finish line that has a shuttle to the start for roughly a million dollars a night, so that'll be fun and not break the bank at all. There are a few other Sioux Falls lady runners who are applying for the lottery as well, so hopefully we can have a full room to cut down the cost a bit.

A few of my runner friends were talking about the Crazy Horse Half Marathon the following weekend, so we decided that will be our back up plan if TC10 doesn't work out.

Cross your fingers for us please!!

Also, it's totally our one year runnerfriendivarsary today, so yay us! Thanks for being my BRF Toni! You've made the last year of running way more fun than it has been in a really long time!

Fall Race Plans

Well we're in the midst of spring (!!!!) and it's truly the most wonderful time of year. I live in South Dakota for the spring and fall seasons (however fleeting and quick they are). But that also means that while I'm in the depths of training for my spring goal race, I have fall races on the mind!

I just pulled the trigger on my fall goal race!

I'll be heading to Massachusetts to visit one of my besties from college and to explore Boston with her and her kiddos. And while I'm there, I'll be running the OceanView Half Marathon on November 5th!

And because I was having the worst running fomo of my life a few months ago, with every running friend I know (slight exaggeration) signing up to run the Twin Cities Marathon, I talked myself off of the ledge (NO MARATHONS IN 2017 JERBEAR!) by planning to jump in the lottery for the TC 10 miler Oct. 1! It'll be perfect (assuming I get in). I get to have the same race weekend experience, I get to enjoy the last ~10ish miles of the marathon, getting me amped to do it in 2018 (hopefully), and I'll be able to cheer on all of my running friends who are doing the full! PERFECT. Now I just have to get in... tick tock tick tock.

For the lucky 13th year, I'll also be lining up for the Sioux Falls Half Marathon on September 10th. This race is hard to shoot for a PR on, imo. The weather is typically warmer and humid, and there are some intense hills. I do think I could shoot for a course PR while training for the above mentioned races, so I'll use it as a training run to keep my streak going!

Conundrum

My initial plan going in to this racing season was to get back to where I was before grad school started. For some reason, I thought that would take just a few short months (yes, I'm now realizing how outrageous this is) as after perusing my 2014 goals I see half marathon PR and 10k PR on tap for this spring. As in 4-5 weeks from today.

I was hoping/planning/trying for a close to 2 hour finish at the NYC half so that a ~1:55 goal time for my spring goal races would seem plausible. And that 1:55 half time would give me the green light to sign up for a fall half, because somewhere around hour 4 1/2 of the Madison Marathon I vowed to never run a marathon unless I was 1000% sure I'd be breaking 4 hours. Running 11 minute miles for 26.2 miles is not something my body was meant to do. Ouch. My form falls apart when I run at that pace.

So clearly after last weekend's half performance I'm seriously doubting everything about this fall. In analyzing the race, I think the sort of shape I was in for a half would be slightly sub 2:10, and due to some execution errors and tourist tendencies, I was obviously slower than that. Regardless 2:10+2:10+:xx minutes= way more than sub 4.

Obviously there's a lot of time between now and October (a solid six months) but marathon training would start around June, and typically speedy runs end up taking a back seat to straight endurance mileage for a marathon training program (hence my ever slowing marathon times).

So do I suck it up and still sign up and try my damndest to still get faster (without breaking, which is always the trick with my body) and sign up for the full?

Or do I spend the summer working on 5ks and 10ks and shoot for a speedy fall half instead?

Keeping in mind that I've somewhat vowed to never run a spring full again, so I'd have to wait until Fall 2015 for another 26.2. Gah.

This is why I vowed to never stop running when I got back in to distance running in 2009 (aka the last time I came back from barely running).

See.

CONUNDRUM.

Fall Marathon Plan Shake Up

After I wrote my post about my fall marathon plans, I hopped on to my favorite trusted marathon site: marathonguide.com to see if there were any races that I was missing. When searching the site, I first look at December then November races. Then I check out October races that are further north than me.

Boom.

Bemidji Marathon.

Last year's race was their first ever. The course looks nice and flat and similar to what I train on here. Mid-October 6 hours north of here should be gorgeously cool perfection. And more importantly, the race route actually runs around the lakes up there. Thus making it an easy sell for Kyle and my dad to travel up there to spectate. "Oh, I can fish while I'm waiting for you to run by? Cool, I'll be there."

"Oooooh shoooore... loohk how high up in dah nort dat is....." <--Imagine that's done in my best northern Minnesoooootan accent.

If I go this route and I continue to work on my running form, I'm also considering the Leading Ladies half marathon in Spearfish. It's in August, and being on the western side of the state they tend to have less extreme weather than we do on the east side, so it could actually be a pleasant race morning in August. It's a downhill course which terrifies me since that usually hurts my IT bands, but could be fun! TBD fall. Anyone want to meet me out west for a girls weekend? Fast race friends, check the race results.... could be your chance for a half or marathon W.... I'm looking at you Susan, Angry Runner, etc. etc.
