Words I Never Thought I'd Say

I was cold on my run last night.

I know, I'm as shocked as you are.  Miss "I'm Sweating Just *Thinking* About Running."

In my defense, I started a 2ish hour run 20 minutes before the sunset.  It was a glorious 50 degrees.  No wind.  Sun still slightly to the west.  I wore shorts and a t-shirt, because it was perfect weather.  I was cool until mile one, and then I warmed up, aka perfect running weather.  IMO, if you're not cold during the first mile, you're going to be hot as hell before too long.

The sun set, and the temps dropped (duh).  And I was fine until I got to a busy intersection.  Because of the setting sun, I had to do a residential route for the last 7 miles, meaning a) I almost got hit 7 different times, no joke (stop signs?!!? Let's roll through those or not even stop, amiright?!?) b) I had to stop at busy intersections.  I managed to do pretty well for the first mile of only stopping once, so I was just dandy, but an intersection around mile 6 had me standing and waiting, 2x.

When I first started to run again, my teeth were chattering.  My hands were frozen.  What was I thinking??  I should've worn long sleeves so I could pull them down once it got cold.  I debated (HEAVILY) turning around and cutting the run short.  But then I realized I was still two miles from home, so either way I was going to be cold for at least another 20 minutes.  So my chattering teeth and I continued on.  Sure enough, within another mile I was warm again.  Phew.

Someone remind me of this potentially hypothermic (me? dramatic?? no....) moment in the Madison Marathon which is sure to be perfectly cold, possibly freezing, literally, if I want to take a walk break.  Because clearly walk breaks will lead to hypothermia.  :)

**For the record, it was 39* when I got home, so it's slightly justified that I was cold after standing still for a couple of minutes after being soaked in sweat.  My hands also turns a creepy combo of stark purple and yellow-y/absence of color-y immediately post run.  But hey!  It was a super awesome mid-week LR.  So I got that going for me, which is good.

I guess I should put snow shoes on my list to Santa

I should be very VERY thankful that the winter weather held off considerably this year.  Usually we have snow and very cold weather mid-October until late March, hence why I always falls off the running bandwagon mid-October.  Brrrr.  Luckily for us, and probably unluckily for the planet (hey-o Global warming!), winter has just recently appeared.  I had expected I would have to do 60% of my Dallas Half Marathon training in buckets of snow and below zero temps.  It hasn't even been below zero yet and it's December.  That gets an A+ in my books.  So with all that THANKS out of the way, it's time to start complaining.....

I had my last long run of 12 miles on the schedule for this weekend, and had looked at the weather report on Thursday to determine whether it would be nicer on Saturday or Sunday.  Saturday Hi of 28, Sunday Hi of 22 w/snow flurries.  Well, Saturday, you win resoundingly, congrats.  I waited until 1:30 as it was the "warmest" part of the day.  I think it got up to a whopping 27* with a windchill of 18*.  HEAT WAVE, look out.  To be honest, it wasn't actually that bad, except for the portions where the wind was whipping at my face.  Apparently I'm a big ol' wussy when it comes to wind.  It's painful.

I fueled up with a bowl of coffee ice cream with caramel syrup for breakfast (I wish I was kidding, but when you want something, sometimes you just have to have it. :p).  Shortly before the run, I had a banana with some PB.  Of course, THAT would upset my stomach not the ice cream.  Go figure.  :p

The run started off great, and the first 2 miles came in much faster than I had planned.  After last week's long run , I knew I had the confidence mentally to rock Dallas, so I had just planned on taking these 12 easy.  Shortly after the first 2 miles, I realized the rest of the run wasn't going to be nearly as speedy.  The trail was covered in 1-2" of snow.  Well if that won't slow you down, I don't know what will.  Luckily it wasn't slippery under the snow, that would've been unbearable, it was just hard to get good traction.  One highlight of the run, was that I set a new Jeri record for snot rockets blown in a run.  If you follow me on twitter you might have caught me complaining about a new cold setting in.  My nose has been completely plugged up since the end of work yesterday.  Well she was floooooooowing today.  Yikes.  I feel like Hansel and Gretel, except instead of bread crumbs to mark my way, I used boogers.  Sexy.

The last few miles of the run were really nice because the wind was at my back, and the sun finally sneaked out from behind the clouds to warm up my frozey face.  Plus, I knew that once I got 2 miles away from home, I could enjoy snow-free trails again.

I ended the 12 miles in 1:50:08 for a pace of 9:10.  Not as leisurely of a pace as I had planned, but apparently my legs were ready for some speed the last 2 miles.  [Sidenote:  I may or may not try for roughly the same time on my NEXT long run....to give you a glimpse of my race day goals :D]

No ice baths for this girl, thankfully.  But when I got done, my ankles were sore from the sliding around on the snow.  So I stopped on my stoop, took off my shoes and socks, and grabbed some handfuls of snow to "ice" my ankles with.  Some may say that's a big "unconventional"I say it's genius and resourceful. :)

My knees were pretty sore throughout the night and on Sunday.  I'm guessing the sliding around probably caused some extra stress to them.  I was having a terrible-rotten-no good-very-bad-day, so I forced myself to head to the gym to sweat off the crabbies.  Since my legs were tired, I opted for an hour bike ride on the stationary bike.  I did some rolling hills at a decent resistance and went 13.65 miles.  My best mph yet.  WHOO!  Plus I got through some health and fitness mags, as well as some trashy celeb gossip mags that were lying around my gym.  I loooove to read them, but refuse to buy them.  And I only let myself read them while working my booty off.  :)

Sweating helped and so did a visit from one of my favorite people in the world.  Of course, his arrival meant I had to watch the end of the Vikings slaughter game, which I giggled and giggled about.  I do still love me some Brett Favre, so I wasn't too upset about it.  Watching some Christmas Vacation was the cherry on top of my SUNDAY (sundae, get it?!?!  muhaha).  Crabby mood, buh bye, see you late in 2010.  :p

Tonight my best guy friend from college is coming to stay with me before his job interview for a job much much closer to meeeeeeeeeee.  Ok, that's not the reason he's applying for the job, obvi, but it's what I'm most excited about.  We were pretty much connected at the hip for 2 years in college.  We're going to hit up the gym and leave our mark in sweat,

Funny story:  His nickname in college was Sweat King, because of his ability to sweat.  I had heard about him and his sweaty ways, and introduced myself to him at a party.
Jeri:  So uh... I hear you're the Sweat King (as he's standing in front of a boxed fan in a 98* basement at a party in early September).
SK:  Uh..yup.
Jeri:  I think I could be your Sweat Queen.  Share the fan please.  :)

And the rest is history.

Anyway, after sweating all over the gym, we're going to head out for some drinks and some foods and cheer on our Packers.  Yes, he's also a GB Packers fan.  A match made in sweaty heaven, I tell you.  Hopefully tomorrow's post will be riddled with fabulous pictures of the Royal Reunion.  Yes.  I went there. :)

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

I have one word to describe Wednesday night's run:  holy-shit-this-is-horrible-i-want-to-die-and/or-move-away-immediately.  It was SO COLD.  I thought I was prepared for a cold run, but I was oh so wrong.  The temp wasn't so bad, in the 20s, but the wind was brutal 10-15 mph.  While the wind was at my back, I was perfectly comfy, even slightly warm, but I had tears running down my face when I was running against the wind.  Partially because of the wind, partially because of the pain.  My coat zipper stuck to my neck on a couple of occasions because it was so cold and I was still slightly sweaty.  Talk about ouch.  I almost stopped at one point to turn around and walk home backwards it was so brutal.  Ugh.  Never again.  Will utilize the gym if necessary.

Ok the run from hell:  I did 5 miles in 47:21 for a pace of 9:29.  My splits were all over the place because of the wind and horrendous pain I was in running against it.

1. 9:32
2. 9:15
3. 9:15

5. 9:40

Thursday I woke up ready to head to the gym for an easy 5 miles.  After the run from hell, and the huge snow fall we had, I knew I wasn't subjecting myself to running outside again.  After puttsing around, I decided to do yoga instead, opting to head to the gym after work instead. Mistake #1.

After work, I quick got ready for the gym and headed out.  I contemplating going to tan before the gym, but realized I would be even WARMER if I did that, so I decided not to.  Mistake #2.  While waiting to make a left hand turn to head to my gym (I live about 1 mile from my gym, great location), I got rear-ended by some ding dong.

The setting:  8:25pm dark and biting cold.  CRASH/CRUNCH!
Jeri:  What happened!?!?!
Ding dong:  Well.... I hit you.
Jeri:  I know but why!?!?!?!?  Was it slippery or something?
Ding dong:  Nope, I just wasn't paying attention.  We should probably call someone.
End scene.

His car didn't have a scratch on it, but my bumper shattered.  Because of the extreme cold (it was probably in the single digits at this point) the plastic was just decimated.  The guy kept apologizing, and I kept saying it was fine, as long as I could get to my gym before it closed.  :p

After talking to the cop and exchanging insurance info., I was finally free to go.  Mr. Wreckless Driver had to stay in the cop car, presumably to get his ticket.  I got to the gym and knew I'd have to shorten my tempo run.  A run that I had been dreading all day had taken on new meaning.  I was SO happy to be ok and that the accident wasn't anything serious.  (Disclosure:  I'm deathly afraid of car accidents.  I didn't have my license until very late in life because of it, and still refuse to drive 99% of the time.)

The adrenaline from the accident definitely gave me an extra boost on my run.  I had 7 miles, with 5 at a tempo pace of 8:28, 1 warm up and 1 mile cool down.  I ended up having to omit the cool down, and opted to walk for a minute as the gym was closing.  The tempo pace felt like a BREEZE!  It's making me think an 8:30 pace for the Dallas HM might be doable!!!

I did the 6 miles in 51:10 for a pace of 8:32.  Tempo pace:  8:20.
1. 9:26 2. 8:21 3. 8:26 4. 8:26 5. 8:22 6. 8:06

The run felt gooooooood.  I kicked up the pace the last 2 miles because I was feeling great, plus I knew I wanted to walk at least a little post run before going out into the cold.

I got an estimate on my car repairs Friday after work, and a new bumper plus labor is 1/2 as much as my far cost.  Pretty happy I wasn't at fault for the accident. :p

Ok, onto some happy things.  My Christmas tree.

Also, after cleaning my living living room to put up my decorations, I realized I needed a place to display my race medals, other than just lying on the floor.  I was pretty happy with my solution.  I may or may not have tried to string lights on my bike, but the string of lights was dead. :(

USF Community 5k Race Report

I had been sick all week, staying home from work Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, but was determined to run the 5k on Saturday because I figured it would be the last of the season (unless I wanted to run with a snow s
hovel, that is). Friday night, I went out with one of my favorite people (and founder of Team Green) Melissa, for some italian style pizzas.  As always, when eating pizza, I was craving beer, so I decided to have a delicious Fat Tire also.  Carb up, right?  :) After dinner, I still had a bottomless pit for a stomach, so we decided to go to a fancy restaurant for some dessert.  We split a delicious tiramisu and a creme brulee.  YUM.  The dessert may or may not have been accompanied by Fat Tire #2.  And then it was off to bed, but not before laying out my race clothes (reminding me to charge my Garmin, that would've SUCKED!).

I woke up bright and early Saturday morning to eat some
breakfast and check the weather report trying to decide what to wear.  When I got to the race, I saw my parents pull in right before me.  They are VERY punctual people.  I decided to wear my fleece because it was pretty darn cold out.  When I looked at the race route I realized it was some ridiculous criss crossing double loop style route.  I was already annoyed and hadn't even started running yet.  :p  My dad came to collect my layer of warmth right before the race started and my mom snapped a shot.  It looks like we're talking race strategy....

Dad:  Here's what you do.....you get out fast, pick up some speed in the middle, and finish with a STRONG KICK!

My dad was a sprinter back in the day too, so he's as clueless about distance/endurance racing as I am.  :)

We started the race on the track running a lap and a half.  I lined up on the inside, and stuck there the whole time.  I'm not running farther than 3.1!!  I got out to a pretty quick start, and from the beginning I was the 5th girl and around 10th overall.  The two gals that are in the left of this photo ended up winning the race taking 1st and 2nd overall.  They are a mother daughter duo (ya, I googled them post race).  The mom is 52 and still has Drake Relay records, that her daughter, 16, is trying to catch.  CRAZINESS.  (Sorry for the underline, my Mac won't let me un-underline....grr)

I really enjoyed running on the track, but the runners thinned out asap.  It did allow my madre to snap a bunch of pics though.  Score.  :)

This silly girl thought she could pass me.  Yes go ahead.... and do it while you're on the curve too, might as well run a little out of your way for your effort.  She decided not to....heehe.

After we left the track it thinned out BIG time.  It was a super confusing course through muddy/pot hole ridden parking lots of a football stadium.  Not impressed.  You didn't run more than 4 strides without making an awkward turn.

There were football players standing at every turn pointing which direction we were supposed to go in, oh hey!  another mud puddle, sweet race route.  Grr.

One point for the course was that my mom could stand in one spot and see me 12389237492837 times.  Also, my dad could sit in the truck staying warm (because the route was IN A PARKING LOT) and cheer me on.

About halfway through I realized that a PR was out of the question for the day, and set my sights on coming in under 25 minutes.  My ab started hurting pretty bad, but I was able to do some weird breathing pattern to lessen the pain.  I hope I can remember what that was.  That would be convenient.

This is the one and only person to pass me during the race.  I think being in such a small race field (and not being able to see ANYONE, other than the person directly in front of me) really made me not push as hard as I usually do.  I'm such a competitive person, and that usually pulls me through in a race, because I'm constantly trying to catch people.  I knew the girl in front of me was running exactly the same pace as me, and was too far in front to catch given how much of the race was left, so I just settled in at my pace instead of pushing it.  Crappy.

I actually heard my mom yell out after she took this pictures, "Oh my gosh, that was a good picture!"  After the race, she said she liked it because you could really see how I was gritting my teeth.  Umm...mom, close ups of my face are not really what I'm going for in race pictures.  I would much prefer you snap shots that are full body and make me look FAST!  :)

The crappy part of the double loop race, I totally lapped this guy.  :(

And the we finished with another couple laps on the track.  Somehow my usual kick never showed up.  My lungs hurt BAD, and I suppose being sick all week probably played a role in that.

My mom always seems to get a good shot of my butt during races.  :p

Here I am just shy of the finish line (I think....)

I finished in 24:41 for a pace of 7:58.  It was my 3rd fastest 5k time.  I was bummed because I had really wanted to PR one final time for the 2009 running season.  With all the factors of the day, being sick, cold cold weather, and crappy running route, I'm actually pretty proud of my time.  And this is the ONLY race I've run in 2009 that hasn't been a PR, so I should be really proud of all those that I've had throughout the year.

My splits for the race:
1.  7:52
2.  8:06
3.  8:08 (uh...ya not the usual Jeri finish)
.1  :34 (7:05 pace)

I came in 5th overall for women and 13th overall.  I'm not sure how I did for my age group, because I forgot to check that info after the race yesterday.  I know that 2 of the girls in front of me (mentioned above) weren't in my AG, and the 2 others were either in their 20's or early 30's.  So I'm anywhere from 1st to 3rd in my AG.

I pulled up my race results from the only other race I've done in similar conditions (actually it was warmer for this race back in March) and I totally beat THAT time by over a full minute, so that's totally a success in my book.

After the race, while walking to my car, Melissa and I found a dumpster that was FULL of old cheer and dance trophies.  Of course I had to take some pictures to make it look like I won sweet trophies from the race.  Please enjoy.

Easy Run + Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day

This morning I had 6 easy miles to complete. After tossing and turning all night long, I was ready to get out of bed when Taylor's alarm went off at 4:45am. Of course than I dawdled, even though my goal was to complete the run before the sun came up. Grr. I was finally out the door. The temp said it was 53 degrees but 90% humidity, so I figured I would be a-ok in a tank and shorts. WRONG. Holy brrr....I was freezing!!!

Normally I stop at the one mile point of my easy runs to stretch out my muscles, they were so frozen that I didn't even bother until the 3 mile turn around point. Of course after stretching for a couple of minutes, what sweat I did have worked up had frozen even more. It was at the turn around point that I realized I could see my breath. Oy, I'm an idiot. Need to remember to start packing some shirts with SLEEVES for the (apparently) frigid mornings we will soon be embarking on. The one cool thing about starting off in the dark, was that I couldn't see my Garmin at all, so I truly ran by feel. And even more exciting is that my "easy" run by feel is pretty stinkin' close to my "easy" pace that I'm supposed to be doing. Umm...exactly on if you look at my time from today.

I did 6 miles in 57:57 for a pace of 9:40. Yup. The exact pace my training program says I'm supposed to be completing easy runs at. Craziness. My splits were not so even, but I blame that on the frozen state that my legs were in for the first 3 miles, and the frozen state my arms were in for the whole thing. Man oh man did I ever wish I had some of those sweet arm warmer sleeve things that some of you folks are sporting. Christmas present? Hint hint Tay. :) (pink or blue por favor) :D

In other news, I'm pretty bummed that my boyfriend Brett is going to be sporting purple and gold this year. I could handle him as a Jet, not so much as a Vike. I am looking for a crew to come with me to the Monday Night game in Minnesota, so all is not lost.

And in OTHER crappy news, I won't be attending the Blink 182 concert in Minneapolis tonight. WAAAAAAH!!! If you were a follower from the beginning (which is none of you :p no one cared until I started writing about running) you'd know that I LOVE BLINK 182, and almost peed myself when they announced they were getting back together. For a few hours today, I actually thought I was going to make an impromptu trip, but that has been shot down now also. What a bummer of a day!!!

To make myself happy, I was going to challenge myself with a 5 miler this evening on top of my 6 miles from this morning. Plus it would rotate the schedule a bit leaving me with a rest day before my long 12 miler on Saturday morning. BUT NO. We have to go to dinner at an ungodly hour post-work, and will inevitably end up sitting around not eating for 2 hours, thus ruining my plans for a post-dinner run too. Anyone else want to jump on my pity party because it's about to take off full steam!!!

Ok, what I truly need is to go home and do some yoga. Today is Day 5.

Bitchfest 09 is now over. Please feel free to go about your day. :) But not before you go to X-Country2's page to check out her sweet giveaway.
