October in Review

Total Miles:  101.01 down from 184.49 miles last month. 79.8 miles last October. I'm pretty impressed I hit 100!

Total Time:  17:01:33 down from 31:26:46

Total Runs: 15 runs for an average of 6.73 miles/run.

Highest weekly mileage:

Race week of course:
10/1/2018 – 10/7/2018:43.8 mi7:13:129:54 / m

Most hardcore run: I did a speed session with Kristin on Halloween. My first (and only) workout after TCM!

Favorite run: Twin Cities Marathon. I feel like 26.2 miles shouldn't be fun, but I really spent almost the entire 4h and 19 minutes grinning from ear to ear.

Favorite Race: Twin Cities Marathon

Favorite Jam: Eminem's Til I collapse came on with2 miles to go at TCM, and I listened to it on repeat. I give most of the credit to my speed in that last mile to Eminem.

October in Review + Meet Presley

October in Review

Total Miles:  79.8 miles down from 124.4 miles  last month. 98.2 miles last October.

Total Time:  13:14:44 down from 21:20:46. Average pace dropped from 10:18 to 9:58! Whoop!

Total Runs: 13 runs, an average of 6.14 miles/run.

Highest weekly mileage:
10/9/2017 – 10/15/2017:22.1 mi3:38:109:52 / mi

Most hardcore run: Solo speed session on the track. Made more hardcore for how starved I was throughout. Uff. Some really great paces.

Favorite run: I did an 11 mile long run by myself (which I hate) but it actually went really well, I felt strong, and the miles flew by. Sometimes it's nice to have a solo run to be along with your thoughts.

Favorite Race: Twin Cities 10 Mile and the Parks and Rec "5k". The TC10 was an awesome day, and despite not idea race conditions, I had a great race and a lot of fun. The 5k was one of the best races I've ran in a really long time, not worrying about how fast I went out, staying with the hard effort when it would've been easier to slow down, and surprising myself with a sub 8 pace. It was a great day!

Bike Miles: 0 miles.

Favorite Jam: I'm really digging T. Swift's Look What You Made Me Do.

Meet Presley

When Kyle and I were in Memphis, we visited a local running store. I had spent hours in Bass Pro Shop, so I felt like it was only fair. I picked up a couple of OBNOXIOUSLY neon colored long sleeves for me and my bestie. Well, technically I was picking up one for myself, to which Kyle commented, "Wait, you're not getting one for Toni? You should get one for Toni." Well okay then. I guess I'm making all future running purchases in duplicate!

At the checkout, Kyle pointed at a Garmin Fenix that was on display. "Isn't that the watch you wanted? You should just get that too." I had been looking at the Fenixes for months, humming and hawwing over their price tag. I even blogged about it a month or so ago. My final thoughts were that I desperately wanted it, but could not justify the price tag, no matter how hard I tried. Kyle, the extreme conservative when it comes to money thought I should've bought it months ago. Now that I think about it, maybe he was pushing this watch purchase to even out the ridiculous new boat he just bought.... interesting.

Anyway, it wasn't the Garmin Fenix 5S I had been researching, but it was the Fenix 3 in rose gold. As the words were leaving Kyle's mouth, and I was shaking my head no, the sales associate mentioned that she was pretty sure it was heavily discounted as they were coming out with new models. I asked how discounted, and she wasn't sure. She said she could call the store manager, and wanted to know if I was that interested. Well yes, now I am that interested. While she was on hold she had thought it would be 30% off. You have my attention.......

When she got off the phone with her manager, and she gave me the price, my bank account cried, because I said yes. She took 35% off of an already discounted price, so I paid less than 50% for the watch. And honestly, I think she may have made a mistake, because I haven't seen the watch on sale ANYWHERE else.

This watch has so many bells and whistles that I'm sure that I don't even know half of the functions. I'm excited to long some major miles with her in 2018, and knock out some PRs finally! I was playing around with names and thought of Presley and Priscilla, both because she's so cute and those are fun feminine names, and she came from Memphis for goodness sake. Until I realized that my last watch was named Priscilla. I somehow forgot that, and only realized it when I looked back on my blog to see how old my last Garmin was. Btw, Priscilla went to a really good home last week. A newer runner was looking for a Garmin, and she's been killing it at running lately, so I knew she'd take good care of her.

So meet Presley. I think we'll have a long beautiful running relationship together. Swoon.

Favorite race: Monster Dash Half, 14 minutes off of my time from September!!

October in Review + Goals

October in Review

Total Miles: 40.8 down from 57.4 last month.  Down from 82.8 last October.

Total Time:  7:48:11 down from 10:38:32 last month.

Total Runs: 6 for an average of 6.8 miles/run. If you factor the marathon out, my average run is 2.92 miles which is way more accurate. :P

Highest weekly mileage: 10/7-10/13 29.1 miles 5:43:35

Favorite run: Group run at 605 Running Co, first speedy (for me) run back after 26.2.

Most hardcore run: Didn't really have one, between the mega taper for the marathon and recovery. The group run was "hard-ish" but I wouldn't say hardcore at all.

Favorite race: The pretty and zen moments of Bemidji Marathon. Not the suckfest parts.

Bike Miles: 0.

Yoga Classes: 3

Favorite Jam: Taylor Swift's Out of the Woods. On repeat over here.

October Goals
  • Enjoy as much of 26.2 miles as I can in Bemidji.
    • When the miles get tough, believe in myself and my abilities.
  • Recover.
  • Attend a group run/week after recovering. 1/1
  • 1 buddy run or ride a week. Considering I only ran 1/week during my two weeks of recovering, this is a big no.
  • Fitness class challenge! I'm well on my way!

October in Review + November in Review

I'm a bit behind, clearly.

October

Total Miles: 82.8 down from 101.8 last month.
Total Time: 14:42:31 down from 18:00:27 last month.
Total Runs: 9, jeepers. Which means I averaged 9+ miles a run. Hah.
Highest weekly mileage:  October 14-20 47.1 miles.  Peak week!
Favorite run: I had a really strong 18 miler. Usually they suck, so this one went well for once!

Most hardcore run: My last 20 miler. I got an early start to "beat the wind" but it ended up beating the crap out of me the last 8 miles. Good practice for a windy day though!
Favorite race: Trick or Treat 10k (only race)
Bike Miles
: 0
Favorite Jam:  Paramore--Still Into You

This was probably the worst month of training of my marathon cycle. I had some aches that were on the cusp of feeling like injuries, so I took some extra time off to be on the safe side. Definitely not the month of training I wanted to have going in to a marathon. Plus, October is my favorite month to run because it's finally gorgeous around here!

November
Total Miles: 43.3 down from 82.8 last month
Total Time: 7:56:41 down from 14:42:31 last month.
Total Runs: 5 runs, 1 yoga session, 1 weight training session.
Highest weekly mileage:  LOLZ 28.3 race week.
Favorite runMadison Marathon as my race photos indicate, I had a pretty damn good time running 26.2 miles around Madison, despite the hills. I think I was just thrilled that my body held up for that long once again.
Most hardcore run: I did a 6 mile run with 4 at tempo about two weeks after Madison and hit some paces that I haven't seen in a REALLY long time. It was also snowing and only 15* so that helped me feel like a total B.A.
Favorite race: Madison Marathon
Bike Miles
: 0
Favorite Jam:  I'm pretty obsessed with Katy Perry's CD right now, particularly Legendary Lovers, Dark Horse, This is How We Do, Double Rainbow, and it Takes Two (basically the whole CD, really).

It took slightly longer to recover from the marathon than I was expecting. I ran a week out from the race and my legs almost fell off. I went for a hilly run with a friend a few days later and my legs felt like trash after 2 miles (kudos to her for sticking with my slow pace for the next 4 miles, yikes). Finally two weeks after I had a stellar tempo run without setting out intending to do so. I think getting in a car and driving for 7 hours the day after a marathon is never a way to speed along recovery, hah.

October in Review + 20 Miler for Philly

October In Review
Total Miles: 170.7 up from 121.2 last month. (151.2 miles from October 2010.)  Highest mileage month of the year, and second highest ever!  (Highest was April 2010).  Heck ya!  This includes a mini taper the first week in October since I raced a half.  WHOO!
Total Time: 26:54:05 up from 18:56:33. (23:52:41 last October.)
Total Runs: 23 for an average of 7.42/run.
Highest weekly mileage:
10/24/2011 — 10/30/2011:50.0 Mi7:59:30
My second 50 mile week ever. :D
Favorite run: My mid-week double digit run.  See below.
Most hardcore run:  Either my 8 mile run with 4 at tempo, or my 600 m intervals.  I managed to find some sub 7 speed in these ol' legs of mine.  So that was fun.  Apparently I failed to blog about the intervals.  Meh.  Just imagine greatness, I guess.  :P
Favorite raceFargo FM half marathon.  Well, half of it was good.  So perhaps I should say the Fargo quarter marathon. :)
Bike Miles: 0.  I thought about it, does that count?  Between 8 hours of running, and a gazillion hours of school + work, biking is just not happening.  And that's sad because its still nice enough to do it.  Sorry Princess Leia.
Favorite Jams: Beyonce's Love on Top.
________________
So quick recap of last week since I was too lazy to blog apparently, I did intervals.  They were fast (for me) the recoveries were slow (for me).  Interval paces on the 600s were in the 6:30s-6:40s.  Heyo!

And on to my favorite run of the month, the 11 miler on Thursday.  After doing 8 miles, the night before with some speedy 600s, I was concerned my legs would be d-e-a-d.  But I didn't have class, due to fall break, so I was going to take full advantage and get my run in while crunching around on some fallen leaves.  I was prepared to take the run slow, since the name of the game is injury free, but my legs weren't having it.  I was in the 9:20s for most of the run with a low HR.  I'm sure the 46 degrees didn't hurt the cause.  And yes, I was the only one out there in shorts and a tee.  Hey, I put on a tee shirt, not like I'm crazy wearing a tanktop! The last few miles were a little scary since the sun had completely set.  I also slowed down since I always seem to fall, and the odds of this only increase when it's dark.  :/

I did 11 miles in 1:44:13 for a pace of 9:29.

Friday I somehow convinced Kyle to join me for part of my recovery run.  I did 2.5 miles without him and then he joined me for the last 1.5 miles.  We ran for about 4-5 minutes, then took a walk break, and repeated until we were done.  A dude in vibrams sprinted past us on a walk break, and that lit a fire under Kyle.  Of course that next running stretch had to be in the 8:30s.  Come on dude, this is my RECOVERY RUN.  But it was fun to have his company, and he didn't throw me in the river when we got there, so overall, I'd say that's a win!

Saturday morning was the last (and only) 20 miler of Philly training.  Eep!  After a glorious 11 hours of sleep (yes, seriously), I finally rolled out of bed and hit the trails.  I was bummed that I was too lazy to get up early, because the trick or treat trail run was going on, and I meant to intersect with the route and cheer my friends on.  Grr.

After putting in 30 miles in a few short days, my legs were trashed from the start.  Which is good, I suppose.  Nothing wrong with getting in some major miles on super tired legs.  Mental toughness, I'm chasin' ya!  The first 5 miles were pretty pokey and in to the wind, which sucked.  Especially because weather.com had told me the wind was to be a light 3 mph breeze.  Liars.

I finally got some pep in my step about an hour in (probably didn't hurt that the wind was at my back) and decided to add some difficulty to my run (you know, because 20 miles isn't hard enough) and added a long hill in the middle of it.  I heard there are about 2 decent hills in Philly, so might as well get a little practice since I suck at them.  Adding pain to the current... uh... pain.... is the awful smell blowing over from the meat packing plant.  It. Was. Terrible.  I could taste the crap.  And of course this is right by our penitentiary, so I was on high alert for an escapees.  So much fun.

When I finally hit ten miles and turned around, I was assaulted by the wind, yet again.  And the smell of the meat packing plant.  Barf.  Luckily I had some downhill miles to attend to.  After the downhills, life started to suck.  I always seem to lose some steam during the middle 3rd of a run.  The wind wasn't helping.  Somehow I managed to kick up the pace a little bit during the final 3 miles to finish strong.  Not my fastest 20 miler, but definitely my most consistent.  And I finished feeling like I could easily run for another hour, which I haven't always been able to say at the end of a 20 miler.  I hit 9:20 and 8:40 for miles 19 and 20.

I did 20 miles in 3:12:34 for a pace of 9:38.

And apparently I took a total of 2 photos this weekend, but they were important hydrating photos, so enjoy.
Sunday morning mimosas.

Me:  How much do you think you'll drink?  What size champagne should I get?
KK:  Jeri... it's 10am, I'm not going to drink.  Get whatever you want.

And then Sunday night I had the grossest beer ever to wrap up the Old Chicago Halloween mini-tour.  If I wanted apple juice, I'd order apple juice.  Ick.

20 Mile + October in Review

Saturday I had attempt #3 at 20 miler #1.  Attempt #1:  Mankato Half Marathon + 6.9 miles that didn't happen.  Attempt #2:  4 mile death run fail.  I started the run on the same route that I attempted last week with some hillier miles for the beginning 4 miles.  When I circled back to my apartment I grabbed my handleheld and GUs and was off.
1. 9:15
2. 9:29
3. 9:31
4. 9:34
5. 9:39

The miles seemed to fly by and before I knew it I was halfway done with the run.  (P.S. I'm pretty sure this is why you're not supposed to wait 3-4 days to blog about a run.... I seriously am blanking on anything fun/eventful/noteworthy from the first half of this run.)  I did start to feel warmed up, and my mile times sped up ever so slightly.
6. 9:30
7. 9:32
8. 9:26
9. 9:24
10. 9:19

It was shortly after the halfway point that I ran in to Tom who turned around to run some miles with me. Yay running buddy!  He was doing 15 that day, so it was nice to have some of our miles overlap.  He's doing the Goofy Challenge in January, so we talked about about his race plan, strategy and race schedule for 2011.  I suck at running + talking.  Seriously.  It's so hard to breathe properly when you're babbling away.  I was starting to get tired so I bid adieu to Tom after about 5 miles and he sped off in to the distance.  One of our run topics had to do with Tom wishing he knew sign language.  I think some signing will need to be implemented the next time we run so I don't suck so much!  Oh well, it was still nice to run with Tom.   :)
11. 9:17
12. 9:28
13. 9:50
14. 9:50
15. 9:59

Part of the reason I was hating life so much while running with Tom is that we had a couple of mile stretch where we were running in to the wind.  Blech.  Wind is dumb.  After we went our opposite directions, I had nothing to distract me from the wind.  It sucked.  And was dumb.  :)  I was pretty tired for the last couple of miles and was just ready to be done.  Unfortunately, there is some construction on the bike path, so after the 4.15 miles and the out and back I still had 3/4 of a mile to do once I got back to my apartment.  Can I just tell you how much it sucks to be at your apartment after 3 hours of running nad have to keep going?!?!?  Suckkkkkkkkks.  I ran around the block randomly until my watch finally told me 20 miles.
16. 9:27
17. 9:31
18. 9:44
19. 9:31
20. 9:42

I really tried to pick up the pace, but I was pretty tuckered out from fighting the wind for the last 7ish miles.  I did 20 miles in 3:10:58 for a pace of 9:33.

When I was done, I was tired, but my legs felt pretty good, especially compared to the 20 milers I did last spring.  Getting ready to go out for the night, I was even dancing around my apartment.  Whaaaaaaaaaaa?  Sunday I had to retrieve my car from a friend's so I opted to do a quick 2 mile jog there and had to rein my legs in from going to fast..... on hills.  Again.... whaaaaaaa?  Pretty much made up my mind that 22 this weekend is totally doable.  Eeeeeek!

October in Review

Total Miles
: 151.2 up from 86.1 last month. Almost doubled.  Whoo!  (Last October 115.1)

Total Time:  23:52:41 up from 13:18:55. (17:41:15 last Oct.).

Total Runs: 19 for an average of 7.96/run

Highest weekly mileage: 10/18-10/24 39 Miles 6:21:55

Favorite run: Oh man, I had so many googly-eyed-I-want-to-shout-it-from-the-roof-tops-how-much-I-LOOOOOVE-running runs, that it'll be hard to narrow it down.  I'll go with my 18 mile domination.

Most hardcore run: Toss up between some tough mile repeats or a tough tempo run.

Favorite Race: Well I technically only had one true race: the Twin Cities 10 Mile.  But even that was a "let's test the knee because we should be two weeks in to marathon training right now AND DEAR GOD TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!!"  I have to say that I ADORED pacing for the Mankato Half Marathon.  Definitely something I'll do again.  :)

Bike Miles: [whistles in a distracting manner] It would appear that I logged exactly 0 miles for October.  :/  In my defense I biked a lot (for me) in September because I was injured and in October I was head over heels in love with running.  Get over it.  ;)

Favorite Jams: Rihanna--Only Girl (still), Foo Fighters--Everlong (obsessed) and Taylor Swift--Haunted (ipod killer).
